This term hasn’t always been fully understood. I see growth hacking as the intersection between Product / Marketing and Sales in a tech company. Here’s an example. Facebook took a look at user activity and data (shocking, I know) and saw that once a new user hit 21 or more friends they were more likely to stay active on Facebook and engage with posts, photos, friends, etc. With fewer than 21 friends, they were more likely to drop off. And since a platform, nor business model, can exist without users, they needed to find a way to retain users. So what Facebook did was it collaborated with Engineering to create a tool that you see ‘recommend a friend’ for new users. Thereby increasing user retention.
